IN CHARACTERName: Genji Shimada
Canon: Overwatch
Canon Point: Current time, post reformation of Overwatch.
Age: 35
History: Wiki PagePersonality: Genji Shimada is, seemingly, a calm individual with an sense of honor who has achieved great inner peace within him. Years of training and meditating with Zenyatta in Nepal has allowed him to find ways of releasing his anger and hurt, and instead balance himself out from within. He gives off an air of sure confidence and immeasurable patience, seemingly incapable of being frustrated by most situations he comes across. A true warrior of tranquility who is able to forgive even the man who tried to murder him.
It is, of course, a little more complicated than that.
For a long time in his life, Genji had spent it in rage and understandably so; several years ago, his own brother had attempted to kill him and nearly succeeded in doing so, leaving Genji
on the brink of death until he'd been saved by Overwatch. The only way
to save Genji was to implement several prosthetic and cybernetic parts into him, leaving him a mess of a cyborg after the incident. After he'd been saved, Genji had spent years angry at what he'd become, a half-machine monstrosity in a world where sentient robots were considered a viable threat against humanity. For quite sometime, his temper was unreasonable, but eventually simmered down to being controlled and pacified under training with a robotic monk known as Zenyatta. Albeit Genji is much more peaceful now, he still has flare ups of his rage when he comes truly frustrated.
Along with those flare ups also comes along with two other things since the destructive duel with Hanzo: there are moments in which Genji does deal with post-traumatic stress disorder since the fight and due to his strained relationship with his brother. The fight is suggested to have been fairly one-sided with how much it maimed and nearly killed Genji as he is missing all of his limbs, his face is shown to be scarred, and is likely missing other parts of his body as well, thoroughly reconstructed in most ways with the most accessible technology at the time and undoubtedly for many days. With this in mind, there are a few things that could trigger him, such as loud, deep noises such as thunder or explosions, as well as being forced upon an operating table.
Genji has always had a side to him of being playful and cracking jokes as well; before his fateful fight with his brother, Hanzo, he'd spend his nights hitting the town, partying, playing video games at the local arcade, and being an infamous playboy. Although he's calmed since those days, Genji still very clearly has a decent sense of humor. Often times, he cracks jokes about how he's a "green ninja cyborg", showing that he's long since accepted who he is now during his growth under Zenyatta's teachings and is able to laugh at himself.
Ever since his teachings with Zenyatta, Genji has also found that creating meaningful relationships with people now more important than ever, showing his impressive change since he was a young playboy with far too much fortune to spend. Cultivating and nurturing trust is immensely important to Genji, as well as being patient with others and learning to forgive. The most difficult relationship of all is with his brother, but even in this Genji has forgiven him, letting go of his hurt and anger and instead valuing the love that they both shared once so long ago. Genji will actively seek out people and pursue friendships, perhaps even sometimes when they don't think they need or want it.
Contracts: Genji will remain skeptical of what he's been told, but will sign any contract that allows him to live peacefully and work until they or he figure something out. He may not necessarily want to leave immediately, after all once it becomes clear there are others in the same situation, his priorities may align more toward making sure everyone gets home, not just himself.
Abilities/Skills: Genji was born an heir to the Shimada family, famous for the ability to summon and control the family guardian spirit dragons, (just one in his case, as his brother is able to summon two.) Upon calling his dragon, it can either appear in its spirit form or imbue his sword with its power, allowing him to strike quickly and with great power. His own skills include a very classic 'ninja' set, heightened stealth and agility, the ability to 'parkour' (for lack of a better term) over most high walls and obstacles and his skill with a sword. Being a cyborg makes him very durable, able to take a bit more of a beating, he also has arm-mounted shuriken which can be reloaded with the flick of a wrist.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Genji is fast, precise and light on his feet. He can scale high places and move quickly and quietly. Hand-to-hand and close quarters combat are his specialty. Genji is also fairly charismatic and generally likable. He's calm and focused, easy to get along with.
Unfortunately, he's absolute rubbish if faced with long distance combat. A well-used EMP would likely render him on the verge of death or at the very least immobilized, being as his cybernetics are what keep him alive. He is also not very physically strong, and once he's pinned down, he's not getting up. He does have some PTSD related to the incident with his brother, and medical trauma.
Items: His sword, a full set of shuriken that are loaded into his body, one photograph, some incense.
SAMPLESNetwork Sample: [
A green visor lights up the camera, leaving light trails as its owner shifts his head, adjusting the view before stepping back and lifting a hand in greeting. ]
Yo! Genji here. I am... new! Obviously. Being as I do not imagine any of you have seen me before. [
Pause for some awkward. ]
Anyways, I was told there are other people in my situation, so I will save you all the personal concerns in favor of simply meeting you. I would love to know where everyone else came from, or where you plan to go back to. After all, we may hail from many different places, but in my experience that kind of thing has never stood in the way of forming new friendships. I will do my best to be of any assistance and make myself useful at any opportunity.
Oh! If anyone happens to know a quiet place that might lend itself well to meditation, I would love to know!
Ah- I suppose a proper introduction would be nice, wouldn't it? My name is Genji Shimada, but just Genji is fine. It is a pleasure to meet you all.
I am happy to answer any questions you might have.
Prose/Action Sample: His first night is strange. To say the least, and he would expect as much. He wishes he could say he's in any way surprised his life has gotten this weird, but not much in the way of being uprooted throws him too terribly for a loop anymore. Genji has already gone through the initial internal panic and is ready to at least begin to try to make sense of the situation at hand. To find some kind of peace. Peace it seems is difficult to find here. The hum of the ship is different than that of his own biological and cybernetic enhancements. It's a counter-melody, in a way. It crowds his mind and makes him shift uncomfortably. Meditation is difficult, if not impossible where he is right now. The noise almost marks his anxiety about the whole situation. Manageable, but constant and impossible to completely ignore.
Instead, he decides to let himself roam, as much as he can without being intrusive, through what would apparently be his new dwelling. So strange to be aloe again. He expects new relationships will form in the meantime, but he can't help but miss his masters company. Hana, Tracer and Lucio all bright spots in his day, easily accessible until now. Hell, he even misses Soldier's grousing.
Let go. You will see them again, he reminds himself. They were his family now though, and now more than ever it sticks out to him.
He slips past a worker with a soft apology, trying to ignore the moderately concerned look he receives. Of course, now not everyone will be used to the sight of him. A new start for everything it seems. It's both daunting and oddly exciting. Far from home, longing for the company of his loved ones, but he remembers Zenyatta's teachings. Everyone is connected, and through interpersonal bonds can not just one find peace, but many.
Today he will seek out the others who were drawn here. Maybe there are some who need his help.
